We love coffees from Peru. There's a broad range of flavor profiles depending on how and where the coffees are produced. Across the board though, we often find coffees from Peru to be simultaneously subtle, but complex and dynamic. They're not always in your face with super intense or concentrated flavors, but if you pay close attention, they have so much to offer. This community lot from the Junin region is a perfect example. It's flavors shift and change as you drink it, but we always find a range of jammy red and purple fruits with a deep brown sugary base. Before this year, we had never tasted coffees from the Junin region of Peru, but this lot, along with the Oropel community lot, have really opened our eyes to the cup profiles that are possible here.

San Juan Pueblo Libre is a community lot made up from 4 producers in the Junin region of Peru. Oftentimes, community lots are assumed to be large conglomerations of hundreds of producers' coffees, with little transparency about who is contributing to the final coffee. While this can be true, they can also be really small lots such as this one with detailed records about whose coffees they contain. We work to source lots like San Juan Pueblo Libre that are built with intention, have transparent records, and give shared market access to smallholders through their combined efforts. We believe that community lots like these are a great way for us to support smallholders whose coffee may otherwise be sold for low prices in local or commodity markets. Below are the names of the producers who contributed to the this lot.

  • Juan Apolinario Campos - 5 bags Geisha
  • Nilo Medina Simon - 9 bags Caturra and Bourbon
  • Urbano Camargo - 3 bags Caturra and Bourbon
  • Evaristo Caysahuana - 5 bags Caturra and Bourbon

After milling, the 21 50kg bags of parchment resulted in 11 69kg bags with an extra 9kg. We purchased two of these bags to go towards fulfilling a ten bag forward contract.
